Matt and Deborah are college students studying together in Deborah’s apartment with a textbook in between them. Deborah keeps glancing over at Matt, brushing against him and offering comfort as he worries about failing a final exam. Matt thanks her for helping him throughout the semester and calls her a nice girl. Misreading his tone as mutual interest, Deborah leans in to kiss him. Matt pulls away and admits he is not interested in her like that leading to an awkward exchange. Embarrassed and angered, Deborah confronts him about whether he was ever interested in her. Matt confesses that he encouraged her attention because he needed help passing the class. He apologizes and admits he should leave now. Deborah is so angry she can hardly respond.
As Matt gathers his belongings, he almost grabs her textbook from the couch before remembering it is hers. Deborah picks it up and sarcastically offers it to him. He almost takes it, but instead Deborah uses the book as a weapon and swings it hard against Matt’s head. He is shocked at the sudden violence and doesn’t have time to respond as she swings the book again and impacts hard on Matt’s head sending him to the ground knocked out. Deborah looks at him with a creepy smile and drops the book, walking over to where he landed and grabbing under his shoulders to drag him to the couch. She holds him close and leans her head against his chest enjoying a brief moment of peace. Then Matt regains consciousness and pushes against Deborah, further angering her. She becomes more aggressive and attempts to restrain him, putting her hands around his neck and trying to silence him. Matt struggles hard against Deborah as she leans over him with a crazed smile and holds him down. Matt pushes against her hard and breaks free of her grasp.
He stands up to move away from the couch but Deborah grabs at his ankle and he falls to the floor. He grabs the textbook and uses it as a defensive weapon when Deborah charges at him. They both struggle over the textbook while yelling at each other with Deborah standing over Matt laid out on the floor. Matt pulls hard on the book and breaks it free from Deborah’s grasp. He swings the book hard against her head and sends her tumbling to the side. Matt gets up and tells Deborah to stay away from him but she has completely lost it with a crazed look in her eyes. She lunges at him and he hits her again with the book sending her reeling to the couch. Matt overpowers Deborah and wraps his hands around her throat to keep her down. She struggles fiercely, clawing at Matt and trying to kick up at him but he keeps himself standing above her on the couch and holds her down while shouting at her to calm down. Deborah continues to fight against him so he squeezes harder trying to get her to be quiet. After much struggle he squeezes harder than he thought and there is a cracking sound as her windpipe is crushed.
Matt removes his hands from Deborah and stands over her in shock at what he has done. He yells at her this is her fault, that she didn’t give him any other choice. She stares at him accusingly as her body twitches and spasms trying to take breath through a broken windpipe. Matt thinks quickly and doesn’t see any good way out of this situation so he moves back to the couch nervously and wraps his hands on either side of Deborah’s head. He twists hard and another snap is heard as her neck is broken. She spasms some more and then goes completely still. Matt collapses on the couch next to her in complete shock. He thinks about his next move then resolves to go through with it, he lifts Deborah’s body off the couch and drags her out of the room.
In the basement, Matt ties off a scarf to an overhanging pipe and stages Deborah’s body to make the event look self inflicted. He ties off the cord and positions her so she is almost dangling next to a knocked over chair. He places her notebook next to her feet with the written phrase, “I can’t stand to fail.” Matt walks back through the living room and gathers all of his belongings, finally picking up the textbook and walking out of the home with an uncomfortable look at what he had done.
