Maddie and Daniel are two college students studying for their class test in Maddie’s apartment. They sit close on the couch, working from a shared textbook in between them. Daniel clearly has feelings for Maddie, watching her with quiet affection and hoping for something more. Maddie is stressed and overwhelmed about the upcoming final exam and expresses her frustration. Daniel offers comfort and reassurance, she thanks him for his help and calls him a good guy, saying she wouldn’t have made it through the college semester without him. Encouraged by her kind words, Daniel misreads the moment and tries to kiss her. Maddie quickly pulls away and tells him she’s not interested in him like that.
Daniel is embarrassed and hurt. His frustration boils over as he confronts Maddie, accusing her of leading him on — mentioning her smiles, body language, and the compliments she gave him. Maddie admits she needed help with the class and thought he’d be more willing to help if he thought she liked him. She apologizes, but her explanation only fuels Daniel’s anger. He asks if anything between them was real. She insists he’s a good person but says she’s focused on school and not looking to date anyone. She then asks him to leave.
Daniel gathers his things and heads for the door, but Maddie reminds him about the textbook. He offers to let her keep it — and then, without warning, violently hits her in the head with it. Maddie collapses to the ground, dazed and pleading. Daniel hits her again, knocking her unconscious. He then lifts her onto the couch, cradling her limp body and nuzzling her neck. As Maddie begins to regain consciousness, she finds him hovering over her. She panics and pleads for him to leave her alone. Daniel covers her mouth with his hand muffling her cries. Maddie grasps at the hand and struggles under him but Daniel maintains a tight grip. Maddie knees his and tries to escape, falling off the couch. Daniel scrambles after her and blocks her path, and the two struggle, both reaching for the textbook. They wrestle across the room. Maddie gets her hands on the book and tries to hit him, but he overpowers her. Daniel snatches the hardcover book out of her hands and tosses it to the side. He picks Maddie up and throws her on the couch, cornering her.
Daniel lunges forward and grabs Maddie’s hands by the wrists. She pleads with him, saying she’s willing to give a relationship a chance if he’ll just stop. Daniel sees through the lie and declares this is the only way she’ll ever be his. He straddles her on the couch and wraps his hands around her throat, choking her hard. Maddie fights back desperately, clawing and kicking, but Daniel tightens his grip. They struggle on the couch, both sitting up as Daniel looks his victim eye-to-eye. Maddie fights desperately, clawing and pushing at her attacker but his grip remains tight around her neck. Maddie's face turns red and her eyes go crossed from the pressure. Tears leak from her eyes as she is forced to endure the intense pressure with no relent. Daniel pushes Maddie back onto the couch and holds her down tightly. Maddie's feet kick up in the air as she continues to fight against her attacker with no avail.
After a long struggle, Maddie's movements slow and the life drains from her body. Daniel lets go and catches his breath, looking down on his victim. He lifts her up partway on the couch and cuddles her while Maddie’s eyes stare lifelessly into the distance. Daniel holds her close and kisses her dead lips, caressing her face and positioning himself over her on the couch.
Later, Daniel has moved Maddie’s body to the basement and staged a fake crime scene. Maddie has been hanged, an extension cord around her neck and tied to a ceiling pipe. Her expression remains frozen in terror. Daniel places her notebook beneath her body with a final note that reads: “I can’t stand to fail.” He gives one last look at the crime scene and leaves. Back upstairs, Daniel calmly picks up the textbook, puts it into his backpack and walks out of the apartment.
